Moscow, 28 January 2015 – JSC Aeroflot (“the Company”, Moscow Exchange ticker: AFLT) announces operating results of Aeroflot Group (“the Group”) and the Company for December 2014 and the twelve months of 2014 (“FY 2014”).
Operating Highlights
Passenger traffic of Aeroflot Group in December 2014 was 2.7 mln, up 16.0% year-on-year. For the full year 2014, Group traffic totalled 34.7 mln, a 10.7% year-on-year increase. JSC Aeroflot’s traffic was 1.9 mln in December 2014 and 23.6 mln for the full year 2014, up 14.5% and 13.0% year-on-year, respectively.
In December 2014, Group revenue passenger kilometres (“RPKs”) rose by 7.6% year-on-year, while the Company posted 12.2% year-on-year RPK growth. The Group and the Company delivered increases in available seat kilometres (“ASKs”) of 10.3% and 14.0% respectively.
On domestic routes, Group traffic and RPKs increased 35.5% and 31.5% year-on-year respectively in December 2014, mainly driven by increased flight frequencies and carrying capacities on high-demand routes. JSC Aeroflot’s domestic passenger traffic was up by 23.5%, while RPKs increased 19.4% year-on-year in December 2014.
On international routes, Group traffic and RPKs decreased 1.9% and 5.4% year-on-year in December 2014. This was mainly due to a decline in traffic and RPKs in the charter flight segment, as well as lower frequency of flights on Ukrainian routes. JSC Aeroflot’s international passenger traffic was up 7.3% year-on-year, while RPKs increased 8.4% year-on-year in December 2014.
Seat load factor of the Group and the Company in December 2014 decreased by 1.8 percentage points (pps) year-on-year to 71.0% and by 1.2 pps year-on-year to 72.2% respectively. The decrease in the seat load factor was mainly attributed to decrease in the passenger load factor on routes to Southeast Asia, as the Company increased capacity on these routes while ceasing operations of Boeing 767s, replacing them with larger Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Lower demand for leisure travel, which is sensitive to the political and economic crisis, and discontinuation of blocked-off charter flights (which have lower profitability but higher seat load factors) also contributed to the changes in passenger load factor on routes to Southeast Asia.
Fleet Update
During the full year 2014, Aeroflot Group expanded its fleet with 17 Airbus A320s, 18 Boeing 737s, two DHC-8s, two DHC-6s, six Boeing 777-300ERs and six SSJ-100s. In the same period, five Boeing 767-300ERs, six Airbus A320 family aircraft and five Boeing 737s exited the Group fleet as their leases expired. Six Tu-204s, three Airbus A320s and three MD11s were returned in advance to the lessor. The Group also phased-out all its Il-96 aircrafts, one Il-96 was sold. Five aircrafts were reallocated within the Group. Net increase in Aeroflot Group fleet totalled 22 aircrafts.
